History

Woodbine Inc. is a non-profit organisation that provides accommodation, day services and supported employment programs to people with disabilities.

Established in 1951 to provide education and accommodation to 14 mentally retarded (now referred to as intellectually disabled) children in the Warracknabeal district, it is now the largest disability service organisation based in Western Victoria, providing a variety of services, including permanent and respite accommodation, Outreach support, day programs, employment and recreational activities for almost 100 clients.

The Hostel facility was officially opened in November 1954. Warracknabeal, a sub-regional centre in the Wimmera / Mallee region of Victoria, became the first country town in Australia to establish, by voluntary efforts, a private home setting for children with disabilities. Over 50 clients now receive accommodation and after hours support across a range facilities in Warracknabeal, Echuca and Nhill.

While the scope and nature of Woodbine’s activities has changed over time, it continues to maintain its focus on the well-being of its clients and a very close co-operative relationship with the local community. In fact, Woodbine views the success of its programs through its relationship with community members, business and other organisations.
